"Lily? Lily? Wake up, sweetheart..."
Lily opened one eye and groaned with agony.
"Love, it's time for school..."
Alyssa shook her daughter's shoulder persistently.
"Mommy, stop. Stop! You're making my eyes hurt." Lily whined, covering the back of her head with her pillow.
"Lily, don't. This is your first day of school, please cooperate just this once."
"But Mommyyyyy!" Lily cried and her hot tears made her eyes burn worse.
"Liliana, you're going to be late! I expect you at breakfast in ten minutes." With that, Alyssa threw open the windows and removed the bandages from her daughter's eyes.
Lily groaned and slowly heaved herself out of bed trying to walk to her closet and braid her blond hair at the same time.
She slipped into her school uniform, a sky blue short skirt and a creamy white shirt with a turtleneck collar and the school crest embroidered over the left breast pocket.
Lily pulled up her thin white tights and forced her feet into the shiny black loafers before tiredly wandering into the bathroom across the hall from her bedroom.

She washed her face and brushed her teeth, taking extra care with the loose one on the bottom.
Finally, when she could stand it no longer, she peeked at her reflection in the mirror and screamed at the top of her tiny lungs.

Lily ran the wooden staircase, blinded by fear and sorrow.
"Daddy, what'd you do?!" She wailed.
Alyssa looked up from her plate of French toast to stare into her daughters face, and began to gag.
"Excellent!" Dr.A chirped.
The iris of both of Lily's eyes had turned a deep, dark crimson and looked bloodshot.
"Daddy!" Lily cried a second time, rubbing furiously at her red eyes.
When she pulled her little fists away, she saw her tears were tinged with blood, making her cry harder.
"But don't you see well?" Dr.A purred.
It was true; Lily could see every fiber in their expensive foreign rug, every line on her tired mothers face, every drip of milk on her brother's mouth.
It made her terribly dizzy and she needed a chair to steady herself.

"Now now, Liliana..."Alyssa patted her daughters pale hand in an attempt to comfort her.
"Eat a little breakfast, sweetheart, then meet me in the bathroom and I'll clean you up." She soothed.
"Alright, Mama..." Lily climbed up onto her chair and as if by magic, a balding man presented her with a bowl of corn flakes and a tall cool glass of chocolate milk.
Food made her feel a little better, though she couldn't ignore the way the servants face suddenly went pale when he saw her eyes and how he hurried away.
The fact someone found her revolting made her eyes begin to water again, and again she felt like someone had poked hot wires into the eyeball.
She wiped her fingertips against the side of her drink and pressed the condensation to her eyelids offering a little relief.

---

Liliana was perched on the bathroom counter, gazing at herself in the mirror as she waited for Alyssa.
She seemed to have run out of tears, or something to that effect, as water was no longer pouring from her eyes.
Blood was.
Lily wasn't sure if the six drops of blood running down her face appealed to her fascination or horror.
Three dripped from each eye, two of which only reached her cheekbone, and the third one made it almost to her jaw.
Every trail of blood was impossibly straight and impossibly symmetrical, and Lily found herself absolutely enthralled by the sheer unnatural-ness of the whole thing to the point that she would not look away until her mother finally entered.

Alyssa pulled out a pair of black sunglasses from her pocket after washing the blood Lily's face and covered her daughter's eyes with them.
"There. If anyone asks, you tell them you have a...an eye condition. Your eyes are sick, so you have to wear sunglasses all the time, alright?" Alyssa gave her a shaky smile.
Lily tilted her head to one side, and as the glasses were too big for her they almost fell off her nose.
"Okay, Mama." She assured her mother and Alyssa pulled her into a big hug.
"Come on, sweetie, I'll drive you to school."

The mother and daughter stopped by Dr.A's lab before leaving.
"Would you like to drop Lily off for her very first day of school?" Alyssa beamed proudly at her daughter.
"Love to. Can't. Busy." Dr.A grunted, facing away from the two.
In one hand, he clutched a robin, and he used the other to force-feed it an eyedropper of green liquid that looked like slime.
The robin was emitting strange warbling noises, like when someone adjusted knobs on an old-fashioned radio and seemed to t be convulsing like it were having a seizure.
"Suit yourself." Alyssa shrugged and hurried Lily away.

---

They reached the double doors at the front of the house and the same servant that brought Lily her breakfast stopped the pair. "Madam, I recommend you don't drive in your condition..." The man made a point of not making eye contact with Lily.
"Oh, you shut up, I'm perfectly fine." Lily admired the way her mother dismissed him with the air of a stubborn woman whom refused to bend to anyone's will.
The mother and daughter climbed into a shiny red convertible, and roared down the winding brick driveway with the top down, stirring up a mess golden leaves.

The car ride was nearly silent as they drove through the town, past the houses and their neighbors, past various stores and coming to a rest at the cemetery to let a group of schoolchildren cross the road.
Her mother stared out into the graveyard, at the rows and rows of white marble tombstones. "They really do look like great white chalk marks and a giant scoreboard." She mused wistfully and Lily just gave her a perplexed stare.

"Mama…" Lily looked out the rear window at the line of honking cars behind them.
"Oh!" Alyssa seemed to come back to life, jumping a little as if her daughter's voice startled her and chuckled when she saw the minor traffic jam they created. "Oops."
Within a couple minutes they had reached the school building, a frighteningly large two-story structure that read 'Wolf Creek Elementary school' in white letters fastened over the metal door.
Other kids were swarming inside, all the girls wearing uniforms identical to Lily's and the boys wearing brown khakis with light blue shirts with the school crest on it.
Most of them carried backpacks, but the rest simply carried their notebooks and pencils, Lily being part of the latter group.
"Mama, can I have a bag like that?" She pointed to a group of girls standing in a cluster, with little floral pink backpacks that shined under the sun.
"Perhaps." Alyssa replied, adjusting her daughter's braids. "Now hurry up, before you get left behind!"
"'Bye, Mama." Lily suddenly felt clammy and her hand shook when she pushed open the car door and unbuckled herself.
"Wait!" Alyssa called suddenly, putting a hand on Lily's shoulder to stop her. "Before you go inside, turn and…give me a sign you'll be okay. That you'll always be okay and that your old mom doesn't have to worry about you."
Lily blinked twice, processing her mother's words.
"Okay, Mama." She jumped out of the car and adjusted her books, and sprinted to catch up with the other students.
Just before she pushed open the doors of her new school she turned and did the only thing she could think of, she flashed her mother a thumbs-up.
Alyssa smiled distantly and returned and winked back at the little girl, before covering her mouth and coughing three times in a row then pulling out and vanishing in a cloud of smoke.
